Tracy McGrady back with Magic as assistant to CEO

One of the greatest scorers in franchise history is back working with the Orlando Magic.

Tracy McGrady - who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last month - has signed with the Magic to serve as a special assistant to CEO Alex Martins, the team announced Friday.

"Having Tracy McGrady, a perennial All-Star and a Hall of Famer, on our staff is tremendous for our entire organization," Martins said. "Whether it will be on the court with the team or in the Central Florida community, Tracy’s knowledge, experience and stature will be an incredible asset for our players and our organization. We are extremely excited to bring him back home."

McGrady's role will involve him promoting the franchise's new G League team in Lakeland, Fla., assisting the executive team, as well as working with the Magic's players both on and off the court.

"I am thrilled to be back where I truly made a name for myself - with the Orlando Magic," McGrady said. "The DeVos family and the entire organization have always done everything in a first-class manner and I am excited to be able to help them with whatever they may need."

After beginning his playing career with the Toronto Raptors, McGrady joined the Magic in 2000 on a six-year, $67.5-million contract, and played four seasons there before being traded to the Houston Rockets. Despite multiple regular-season scoring titles, McGrady never got Orlando past the first round of the playoffs during his tenure.

The trade from Orlando was partly due to McGrady's strained relationship with former general manager John Weisbrod, who orchestrated the deal.

The 38-year-old McGrady currently ranks third all time in total points (8,298) and first in points per game (28.1) in Magic franchise history.
