Wiggins holding off on signing $148M extension: 'There's no rush'
Andrew Wiggins doesn't want to rush into signing a five-year, $148-million maximum extension offer that will set him and his family up for generations to come.
It's not that Wiggins doesn't want to commit to staying long term with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He just doesn't see any reason to rush ahead of the Oct. 16 extension deadline.
"I’m just taking it day by day, you know?" Wiggins told Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports. "There’s no rush to do it, yet. I’ve still got some time before the day before that first game."
As for staying in snowy Minnesota, the Canadian-born Wiggins reiterated that location isn't an issue for him. He wants to be with the franchise that dealt Kevin Love for him in 2014.
"This is definitely where I want to be," Wiggins said.
Wiggins runs two risks by holding off on his signature. Firstly, he could potentially sustain an injury in preseason that could change the offer. And secondly, he might sour relations with the organization by making them wait. In any event, both cases are extremely unlikely.
The 22-year-old Wiggins averaged 23.6 points per game last season while continuing his ironman steak of having missed just one contest in his entire career.
