Gordon Hayward opened up about his horrific injury and, unsurprisingly, it was emotional.
On Thursday, the Boston Celtics forward spoke to the media for the first time since he suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia just five minutes into his debut with the club on opening night.
Hayward's parents witnessed it in person at Quicken Loans.
"As a parent, you don't want your child to go through that," Hayward told TODAY's Matt Lauer (around the 3:35 mark).
"And as a parent myself, it's like thinking I would rather take their pain. And this is where it makes me emotional because ... I wouldn't want (my daughters) Bernie or Charlie to go through that.
"I remember seeing my mom, and she's crying. Like that's just tough. It's tough to see your parents cry too, because then it makes you emotional."
Hayward confirmed he'll miss the 2017-18 campaign with the injury. He arrived on crutches to the Celtics' practice facility Thursday for a press conference.
