Report: Rockets hold 'strong belief' they can sign LeBron
The team with the best record believe they can add the league's best player.
Houston Rockets officials hold a "strong belief" that they can command an audience with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James when he enters free agency next summer, according to Sam Amick of USA Today.
For what it's worth, Amick reports that same confidence is held by rival executives.
Houston gives James a ready-made situation to continue contending for titles. They already have James Harden under contract for the next half-decade, they hold Chris Paul's Bird Rights, and the supporting cast remains relatively affordable.
However, finding enough money to offer James a maximum contract while also retaining Paul would be incredibly difficult. The Rockets would have to renounce the rights to Trevor Ariza and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, then find a taker for Ryan Anderson's contract to get anywhere close to the salary that James would command.
The Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Philadelphia 76ers are also rumored destinations for James, who holds a player option for 2018-19 worth $35.6 million.
