Ainge: Hayward to be out of walking boot in 2 weeks

Gordan Hayward is nearing a big step in his rehab.

The Boston Celtics small forward will only have to wear a walking boot for about two more weeks before he can ditch it for good, general manager Danny Ainge said Thursday on 98.5 The Sports Hub's "Toucher and Rich."

Hayward, 27, has been recovering from a dislocated left ankle and fractured tibia he suffered in a nasty fall on opening night. He's not expected to play this season, but plans to remain involved with the club. Once physically able, he'll take on a video role with the Celtics and travel with the team.

Coming off his first All-Star campaign, Hayward signed with Boston in free agency this past summer. He averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and a steal last season for the Utah Jazz.

Despite the huge injury blow, the Celtics have been thriving. Kyrie Irving and Al Horford have led the way for the first-place team, with rookie Jayson Tatum and sophomore Jaylen Brown making the most of their increased opportunities in Hayward's stead.
