Hawks convert Cavanaugh from 2-way player by inking multi-year contract

The Atlanta Hawks evidently liked what they've seen from two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh. The team announced it has signed the power forward to a multi-year contract.

Through 19 appearances this season, the George Washington product has averaged 5.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game, but those rates are weighed down by several early-season outings in garbage time. With increased playing time in recent outings, the 6-foot-9 big has thrived; in games in which Cavanaugh has seen at least 20 minutes of playing time, he's averaged 9.2 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Cavanaugh has reached double digits in scoring on four occasions so far this season, including a career-high 16 points in a game against the Pelicans on Nov. 13 in which he hit all four of his attempts from 3-point land. His long-range shooting is, perhaps, the biggest reason he has caught on so soon in Atlanta; he's hit 40.9 percent of the 2.3 3-pointers he's hoisted per game.

Two-way players can spend up to 45 days with their NBA club over the course of a season before their team must either relegate them back to the G-League or convert them to a regular contract player. Cavanaugh becomes just the second two-way player to have his contract converted, after Suns man Mike James.

As the Hawks only have 14 regular players currently under contract, they will not need to release or trade anyone in conjunction with Cavanaugh's signing.
