Mavericks to retire Derek Harper's jersey Jan. 7

The Dallas Mavericks have finally decided to retire Derek Harper's jersey.

Dallas announced Monday that Harper's No. 12 will rise to the rafters when the team plays the New York Knicks on Jan. 7. He will join Brad Davis (No. 15) and Rolando Blackman (No. 22) as the only three players to have their numbers retired by the Mavericks.

"Like every Mavs fan around the world, we are proud of Derek and everything he has done and contributes to do for Mavs fans. His contributions can't be overestimated. We are excited that he will join Ro and Brad in the rafters as we retire number 12 forever," team owner Mark Cuban said.

Harper spent his first 11 seasons in Dallas, where he established himself as a reliable and durable point guard. He also spent three years with the Knicks, before returning for a second tour of duty with the Mavs in 1996-97.

He ranks fourth in points, first in assists, first in steals, and third in minutes played in team history.
