Report: Celtics among contenders interested in Monroe after buyout
Greg Monroe already has a list of interested suitors.
The Phoenix Suns reportedly agreed to buy out the center Wednesday, allowing Monroe to sign with any team without restrictions. The Boston Celtics "will be one of several contending teams" who will attempt to entice Monroe to a new contract, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
While it's unknown which other teams - or even how many - will vie for his services, the Celtics may be in the driver's seat before negotiations even begin. The team still holds an $8.4-million disabled player exception stemming from the disastrous injury to Gordon Hayward on opening night, allowing them plenty of financial freedom to fit the big man on the books.
Monroe is averaging 10.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists this season.
