Warriors-Cavs 1st championship series in North America to repeat 4 straight years
It's never been done before, and may never happen again.
The Golden State Warriors punched their ticket to the NBA Finals on Monday with a 101-92 victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. They'll now face the Cleveland Cavaliers, their old nemesis, for the Larry O'Brien Trophy once again.
It's the first time in North American sports history that the same two teams will square off for a championship four years in a row.
Golden State completed a gentleman's sweep of the Cavs to capture the 2017 title. Cleveland made a historic 3-1 series comeback to defeat the Warriors in 2016, one year after Golden State won its first championship since 1975 in 2015.
The NHL, NFL, and MLB have had repeat matchups in three consecutive years. The Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings were in the Stanley Cup Final from 1954 through 1956, the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions competed for the NFL Championship from 1952 through 1954, and the New York Yankees and New York Giants dueled in the World Series from 1921 through 1923.
Game 1 of this year's Finals tips off Thursday at Oracle Arena.
