Harden averaged a career and league-high 30.4 points, along with 8.8 assists and 5.4 boards, to lead the Rockets to a league-best 65-17 record. He helped push Houston to the Western Conference finals, taking a 3-2 lead against the Golden State Warriors before dropping consecutive games without the help of backcourt mate Chris Paul.
Harden previously captured the award for his 2014-15 campaign.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook was voted MVP by his peers last season and went on to claim the NBA's Most Valuable Player honor shortly after.
The NBA will announce its MVP on June 25. Harden is a finalist, along with Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James and New Orleans Pelicans center Anthony Davis.
