Trae Young will only work out for 4 teams ahead of draft
Trae Young's personal shortlist of preferred teams has evidently been whittled down to just four. The former Oklahoma point guard says he will work out for just the Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, and New York Knicks ahead of the June 21 draft, according to the New York Post's Marc Berman.
The Hawks currently own the No. 3 and No. 19 picks in the first round, and already owe point guard Dennis Schroder $46.5 million through 2021. Few, if any, mock drafts (theScore's included) project Young going as high as the top three.
The Magic have the No. 6 pick, and after trading Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns last season, Shelvin Mack finished as the Magic's top assist man with just 3.9 dimes per game. Young led the nation with 8.7 assists in his lone collegiate season.
The Bulls are set to draft right after Orlando with the No. 7 pick, as well as at No. 22 overall. While Chicago already boasts combo-guard Zach LaVine and 2016 No. 5 pick Kris Dunn, neither offers Young's potential to develop into an ace long-range shooter at the NBA level. Young shot 36 percent on 10.3 threes per game, scoring 27.4 points per game overall.
Finally, the Knicks own the No. 9 pick. After selecting defense-first guard Frank Ntilikina last year, the possibility of adding an offense-first option like Young would give new Knicks coach David Fizdale one of the most interesting backcourt situations in the league, with plenty of time to experiment while the team awaits the return of franchise star Kristaps Porzingis.
It is unlikely, but not inconceivable, that more teams could be added to Young's workout list, says Berman. And of course, just because Young won't work out for other teams doesn't mean one can't draft the 19-year-old.
