Trump won't invite Warriors or Cavaliers to White House
Donald Trump has a message for both teams in the NBA Finals: right back atcha.
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James said neither team would be interested in visiting the White House as champion, and Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry echoed the sentiment. The president countered Friday by declaring he won't invite the winner anyway.
"I didn't invite them. I didn't invite LeBron James, and I didn't invite Steph Curry," Trump told reporters before departing for the G7 summit in Canada, according to Axios. "We're not going to invite either team. But we have other teams who are coming."
Trump then listed the title-winning teams who have made appearances at the White House since he took office.
"You look, we had Alabama - national champion. We had Clemson - national champion. We had the New England Patriots. We had the Pittsburgh Penguins last year," Trump said. "I think we'll have the (Washington Capitals), I mean, we'll see."
Notably absent from this list are the Warriors, whose invitation to visit the White House as champions last year was rescinded by Trump after Curry said he did not wish to attend. Also missing are reigning WNBA champions the Minnesota Lynx, who were in D.C. earlier this week to take on the Washington Mystics; they weren't invited to the White House and spent an afternoon distributing shoes and socks to children from low-income families at a local elementary school instead.
"My adage," Trump said, "is if they want to be here - it's the greatest place on earth. I'm here - if they don't want to be here, I don't want them."
