Clippers trade Austin Rivers to Wizards for Marcin Gortat
The family reunion in Los Angeles has been clipped.
The Los Angeles Clippers have traded Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards for Marcin Gortat, the Wizards confirmed Tuesday.
Rivers recently declared he was executing his player option for 2018-19, worth $12.6 million. The guard is coming off his finest pro season to date, averaging 15.1 points, four assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
Rivers' father, longtime NBA head coach Doc Rivers, previously held autonomy over the Clippers' roster moves as the former team president; he acquired his son via trade from the Boston Celtics in 2014-15 and signed him to a three-year, $35-million deal in July 2016. Last summer, however, Doc had his front-office role scaled back when Lawrence Frank was elevated to executive vice president of basketball operations. The Clippers extended Doc as head coach in May; terms of the deal were not announced.
After five largely successful seasons with the Wizards in which the Polish Hammer averaged 11.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, Gortat appeared to wear out his welcome over the past year.
In January, the 34-year-old opined he'd likely retire after the 2018-19 season, adding that he'd prefer to finish his career with his former team, the Orlando Magic. In February, Gortat appeared to cast shade on teammate John Wall, causing a brief back-and-forth through the media, suggesting bubbling contempt in the Wizards' locker room.
Gortat is set to make $13.6 million next year, after which he'll hit free agency. His addition to the Clippers' frontcourt hints at the possibility of another transaction centering around DeAndre Jordan. The one-time All-Star center has a player option worth $24.7 million for next season, and is reportedly considering opting in to help facilitate a trade. The Dallas Mavericks have allegedly emerged as suitors for Jordan's talents in the paint.
