Cavs add electric PG Collin Sexton with No. 8 pick
With the No. 8 pick in the NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers have drafted point guard Collin Sexton.
Sexton was electric during his freshman season at Alabama, where he averaged 19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. He wasn't a particularly efficient shooter or a prolific passer, but he oozed talent as an athletic guard who could get to the rim at will. He's explosive, finishes over the top of defenders, and is determined on his drives.
That being said, Sexton will only realize his potential if he learns to pick his spots. In order to avoid being the next Dennis Smith Jr., De'Aaron Fox, Elfrid Payton, or Michael Carter-Williams, he'll need to refine his jumper and become more disciplined with his shot selection and playmaking.
Collin Sexton Bio
Position: PG
School: Alabama
College Experience: Freshman
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Wingspan: 6-foot-7
Strengths
- Elite athlete. Will consistently make highlight plays with his drives to the basket. Fearless finisher.
- Workable pullup jumper. Will be able to get that shot whenever he wants, since teams will play him to drive.
- Unmatched motor. Will always compete and shows exceptional determination. He played three-on-five in a game earlier this season and his team held its own.
- Tools to become high-level defender. Can hound ball-handlers with lightning lateral quickness, although he needs more coaching.
Weaknesses
- Will struggle to finish over bigger and stronger defenders in NBA. Sexton will need to add finesse finishes to his game to become more efficient.
- Needs to expand as a playmaker. Awful assist-to-turnover ratio (3.6 to 2.8) is a reflection of his recklessness.
- Solid size for a point guard, but he'll struggle to defend wings and will be limited on switches.
- Inconsistent jump shooter. Won't succeed playing off the ball until his game matures.
