The San Antonio Spurs have promoted assistant coach Becky Hammon to the position vacated by James Borrego, who departed to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced, per Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News.
Ettore Messina will remain Gregg Popovich's lead assistant, but Wednesday's promotion will move Hammon to the front of the bench.
The 41-year-old Hammon had been rumored as a possible NBA head coaching candidate earlier this offseason.
