Report: Warriors to sign 4-time All-Star Cousins
The reigning NBA champions have sent a tidal wave through the Association.
The Golden State Warriors have agreed to sign four-time All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins to a one-year, $5.3-million contract, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Monday's reported deal represents Golden State's taxpayer mid-level exception.
The 27-year-old had narrowed down his choices to either Golden State or the Boston Celtics, sources told ESPN's Chris Haynes.
Cousins has been sidelined since late January after rupturing his Achilles tendon, which cost him the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign while with the New Orleans Pelicans. He's been rehabbing in Las Vegas over the summer, and is reportedly expected to be able to return for the early portion of the 2018-19 season.
While the Pelicans were reportedly hoping to figure out some sort of way to keep Cousins, he ultimately became expendable after they landed Julius Randle on a two-year deal worth $18 million
Cousins put up 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.6 blocks with New Orleans prior to going down. He's also one of just eight players to ever average 25-10-5 in a season (Russell Westbrook, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, and Elgin Baylor).
A lineup featuring Cousins, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson will be the first of its kind, as never before has there been a starting five featuring four players who all averaged 20 or more points the year prior.
Boogie's initial hope had been to ink a max-level deal as an unrestricted free agent, but his injury, along with the lack of teams possessing the necessary cap room, made that a pipe dream. In Golden State, Cousins can continue his recovery, possibly win his first ring, and then hit free agency again next summer with another crack at earning big money.
