The New Orleans Pelicans have come to terms on a one-year, $2.7-million contract with free-agent point guard Elfrid Payton, sources told ESPN's Zach Lowe.

Payton was born in Gretna, La., and starred for three seasons at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, so the reported signing certainly has plenty of local flair.

The 24-year-old has had mixed results at the pro level since being selected No. 10 overall in the 2014 draft. After three-and-a-half seasons with the Orlando Magic, Payton was traded to the Phoenix Suns ahead of the deadline this February for a second-round pick.

Overall, Payton has averaged 11.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, though 29.8 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc has limited his scoring potential to date.
