Report: NBA, USA Basketball blindsided by NCAA's proposed rule changes
Officials with the NBA and USA Basketball were caught off guard when the NCAA announced future rule changes to the representation of elite prospects, reports ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The NCAA announced a series of rule changes Wednesday afternoon, including designating USA Basketball responsible for selecting elite senior high school prospects who will be allowed to sign with registered agents as the NBA shifts toward abolishing the "one-and-done" rule.
USA Basketball reportedly has no interest in accepting the role and would rather have the NBA co-ordinate the list of prospects. All sides did meet to go over the proposed changes, but the NBA and USA Basketball never believed they came to an agreement with an NCAA on the next step.
Wojnarowski adds several NBA officials were surprised at the NCAA's announcement, as the league is still a few years away from making any changes to its one-and-done policy despite its desire for change.
Following the NCAA's announcement, NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league will "review the NCAA's planned reforms and continue to assess, along with our players' association, the potential for any related NBA rule changes."
