Report: Heat-Timberwolves trade talks for Butler break down

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat were reportedly making "significant progress" on a trade for All-Star Jimmy Butler, but then it went awry.

The two sides were reportedly working toward a trade which wouldn't have to involve a third team.

Butler told the Timberwolves' front office that Miami is his preferred trade destination. This reportedly incentivized the Heat to get a deal done, with president Pat Riley as aggressive as any other suitor in an effort to land the 29-year-old wing.

A Timberwolves scout was reportedly present during Tuesday's preseason matchup between Miami and the Charlotte Hornets, leading many to believe a trade was on the brink of completion.

In a recent report, Minnesota's asking price was said to be too steep for inquiring teams, which left several executives questioning whether or not the Timberwolves actually wanted to get a deal done.

Butler is under contract through the 2018-19 season but is currently away from the team as his immediate future is determined.
