Klay on record-setting game: 'I was due for a big night'
It took Warriors star Klay Thompson eight games to catch fire.
The All-Star sharpshooter had struggled to find his rhythm, making just 5-of-36 attempts from behind the arc through Golden State's first seven games. On Monday, however, the narrative changed when Thompson set an NBA single-game record with 14 made 3-pointers during the Warriors' 149-124 win over the Chicago Bulls.
"I just knew I was due for a big night," Thompson said, according to ESPN's Nick Friedell. "I just knew it."
Thompson finished the contest with 52 points in 27 minutes, not seeing the floor after the 4:05 mark of the third quarter.
"It's the best feeling," he added. "Something I haven't felt in the first six, seven games. To snap out of a slump with the record, I couldn't ask for a better way to do it. And I'm just going to continue this momentum on Wednesday, and it's one of the best feelings in basketball when you touch the ball and feel like it's going in every time."
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr didn't realize how close the four-time All-Star was to breaking teammate Stephen Curry's record of 13 made 3-pointers. It wasn't until Thompson pointed out that he needed just two more to surpass his fellow 'Splash Brother.'
"I didn't even realize what was happening, record-wise, until they called a timeout," Kerr said. "He had made a couple in the second half, and I heard Klay say, 'Two more! Two more!' And that's when I realized - and I didn't even know who had the record, and so I asked Steph, I go, 'Do you have the record?' He goes, 'Yeah.' At that point, the guys were just feeding him every time. I think that's how much they care about Klay and felt for him because he's had a rough start to the season, and obviously, he got it going tonight, to say the least."
Thompson will look to expand on his hot shooting when the Warriors host the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.
