Report: Lue hit 'emotional chord,' showed plays in Lakers interview
Tyronn Lue came ready for his meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Lue reportedly met with executives on Wednesday to interview for the franchise's head coaching vacancy, and he left a lasting impression on the team's representatives, sources told the Los Angeles Times' Broderick Turner.
The former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach reportedly showcased potential offensive plays and defensive schemes he would deploy as the Lakers' bench boss. Lue was also sincere about wanting the role, Turner adds.
The 41-year-old struck an "emotional chord" with executives, too, while bringing up his history with the Lakers as a player, according to Stadium's Shams Charania.
Lue spent the first three seasons of his playing career with Los Angeles after the team acquired him in a 1998 draft-night trade from the Denver Nuggets. He helped the organization capture back-to-back championships in his second and third seasons.
He made his head-coaching debut with the Cavaliers midway through the 2015-16 season, leading the club to its first title that year. Partnered with now-Lakers forward LeBron James, Lue helped take Cleveland to another two NBA Finals. He was fired earlier this season after the Cavs went 0-6 to begin the campaign.
Lakers executives, including co-owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka, also reportedly met with Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams on Thursday. Like Lue, Williams left the interview confident about how he presented himself. Williams also reportedly interviewed for the Phoenix Suns' head coaching gig on Friday.
Los Angeles didn't immediately offer the job to either candidate, and the front office didn't specify when a decision will be made, sources told Turner.
The team also reportedly interviewed former Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd on Monday.
The Lakers have been searching for a new head coach since parting ways with Luke Walton on April 12.
