76ers head coach Brown to return next season
Brett Brown will return as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2019-20 season, owner Josh Harris told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.
The New York Times' Marc Stein had previously reported that Brown was likely coaching for his job in Game 7 against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday night. Philadelphia was eliminated from the second round of the NBA playoffs in a 92-90 loss at Scotiabank Arena.
Harris, Brown, and Sixers general manager Elton Brand met Monday to discuss the team's offseason plans, including free agency and the draft.
All-Star center Joel Embiid called the idea of Brown possibly losing his job "bulls---" following Philadelphia's gut-wrenching defeat north of the border.
"This year I think he grew even more as a coach. He learned, we all learned," Embiid said Monday, according to ESPN. "At the end of the day, it comes down to the players. I don't think he should have anything to worry about. He's an amazing coach, a better person. ... If there was someone to blame, I mean, put it all on me."
Brown has served as the Sixers' coach since 2013, going 178-314 (.362) with a pair of playoff berths over the last six seasons. Philadelphia didn't crack the 20-win mark during his first three years on the job, but the team has eclipsed 50 victories in each of the last two campaigns. He inked a contract extension last May that runs through 2022.
