Report: Lakers players embarrassed by team's handling of coaching search

Some members of the Los Angeles Lakers roster are shaking their heads at the organization's failure to secure Tyronn Lue in negotiations, and the entire head coaching search as a whole.

"Certainly from some of the players I've talked to, they've called it an embarrassment. I'm talking about players, I'm talking about players for the Lakers. They consider it an embarrassment of what's going on. It's not the ideal situation to be in," Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports said Friday on "The Spin."

It seemed inevitable that Lue would become the 27th coach in franchise history. The 42-year-old celebrated his birthday last weekend with a Lakers-themed cake, and it was reported days later that he was hashing out the details on a contract.

Negotiations ultimately broke down, though, as Lue reportedly turned down a three-year, $18-million deal after seeking a five-year pact. The Lakers reportedly wanted Lue on board for the duration of LeBron James' tenure, given Lue's tight-knit relationship with the superstar and the fact they won a championship together for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

It seemed there were also issues over Lue's potential coaching staff. The Lakers reportedly wanted a say in who would be a part of the staff and pushed to include former Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd.

With Magic Johnson having stepped down as team president, senior advisor Kurt Rambis has reportedly taken on a larger role in the search for a new head coach. Frank Vogel, Lionel Hollins, Mike Woodson, and J.B. Bickerstaff are all reportedly on the Lakers' radar to fill the vacant position.
