Report: Warriors, Klay plan to reach agreement on $190M max contract
The Splash Brothers won't be separated.
The Golden State Warriors and guard Klay Thompson are planning to reach an agreement on a five-year, $190-million max contract once free agency begins Sunday, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Golden State is sending a team of front-office executives to Los Angeles within the next day to meet with Thompson, Charania adds. Though both parties can formally agree on a new deal as soon as 6 p.m. ET on Sunday (3 p.m. PT in L.A.), no contracts can be officially signed until the NBA's moratorium period ends July 6.
The Warriors were reported Friday to be prepared to offer Thompson a $190-million contract to keep him in the Bay Area. The 29-year-old was always believed to be willing to return if he was offered a max deal, though he supposedly would have met with the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers if Golden State opted against it.
Thompson is coming off his eighth NBA season and averaged 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 40.2 percent on 7.7 3-pointers per game in 2018-19.
He is expected to miss a sizable chunk of the 2019-20 season as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in the NBA Finals.
