Report: Durant's contract with Nets contains player option in 4th year

Kevin Durant's new contract with the Brooklyn Nets contains a player option for 2022-23, allowing the star forward to potentially become a free agent after three seasons, sources told Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Durant would be 33 years old immediately following the 2021-22 campaign.

If he elects to terminate his contract early, Durant could theoretically enter a free-agency class that also contains former teammate Stephen Curry. Meanwhile, LeBron James could become a free agent that summer if he picks up his player option for the 2021-22 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. By doing so, James would guarantee himself $41 million for the season that sees him turn 36.

Durant, 30, signed a reported four-year, $164-million contract with Brooklyn. The club also inked fellow All-Star Kyrie Irving (four years, $141 million) and center DeAndre Jordan (four years, $40 million) as free agents this summer.
