Argentina knocks out medal favorite Serbia in World Cup quarterfinals

Serbia was dealt a shocking upset at the FIBA World Cup on Tuesday, losing 97-87 to Argentina.

Former NBA forward Luis Scola, 39, led the way for the victors, finishing with a team-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds.

Argentina collectively shot 12-of-27 from the 3-point line, which helped the team overcome a pair of significant double-digit deficits. Serbia shot 23-of-28 from the free-throw line compared to just 13-of-17 for Argentina, and also out-rebounded its opponents 42 to 29.

Serbia - which boasts such NBA talents as Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Sacramento Kings - was widely projected as a favorite to reach the podium in China, and perhaps even challenge Team USA for gold. The team finished second at the Rio Olympics in 2016, when it lost to the Americans in the gold-medal game.

For their parts, Bogdanovic finished with a game-high 21 points while Jokic tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and five turnovers.

Argentina advances to face the winner of Wednesday's game between the U.S. and France. Serbia will face the loser of that match as part of classification play, but can now finish no higher than fifth place in the tournament.
