Report: Pelicans apply for disabled player exception after Miller injury

The New Orleans Pelicans have applied to the NBA for a $3.6-million disabled player exception in the wake of Darius Miller's ruptured Achilles tendon, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Miller underwent season-erasing surgery Aug. 29. The forward had just signed a two-year, $14.2-million contract in July after averaging a career-high 8.2 points last season.

The exception allows a team over the salary cap to acquire a replacement for a player who's out for a given season. The maximum salary of the replacement is either 50% of the injured player's salary, or the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, whichever is less.

The Pelicans are currently $9 million over the cap.
