Wizards' Mahinmi out at least 6 weeks with strained Achilles

Washington Wizards center Ian Mahinmi "will be treated conservatively before being re-evaluated in six weeks" after suffering a strained right Achilles tendon, the team announced Thursday.

This is just the latest injury for the soon-to-be-33-year-old, who's missed 104 games over the past three seasons, including 48 in 2018-19.

To date, the French national's tenure in the U.S. capital has been underwhelming relative to his salary. Since signing a four-year, $64-million contract in 2016, Mahinmi has averaged just 4.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game, predominantly serving as a high-priced backup to the likes of Marcin Gortat, Dwight Howard, and Thomas Bryant.

Mahinmi's uncertain availability for the early stages of the 2019-20 season leaves the Wizards' center rotation dangerously sparse. Behind Bryant, only Mo Wagner and Davis Bertans have the size to man the five, although both are known better as floor-spacers than traditional bigs.
