Veteran point guard Jose Calderon is joining the NBPA as a special assistant to executive director Michele Roberts, the organization announced in a press release.

Calderon is the first player to serve in this consulting role, and his duties will include working to "bridge the gap between current players and NBPA staff."

The Spaniard will hold this position for the 2019-20 NBA season, and he'll still be allowed to pursue other business endeavors while working with the union.

"After all these years of playing, this role checked all the boxes of what I was looking for as a transition from my basketball career," Calderon said, according to the release.

"Being able to work alongside Michele and the other union departments will be a great opportunity to learn and explore the other side of professional basketball."

The 38-year-old appeared for seven teams over the course of his 13-year career, the majority of which was spent with the Toronto Raptors.

In 523 games with Toronto, Calderon averaged 10 points and 7.2 assists, while connecting on 38.8% of his 3-point attempts.
