Report: Pistons granted $9.2M exception for Griffin's knee injury

The Detroit Pistons have been granted a $9.2-million disabled player exception for Blake Griffin, who's projected to miss the rest of this season with a left knee injury, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.

Griffin was ruled out indefinitely earlier in January after undergoing surgery on the bothersome knee. It had been reported that the star forward was contemplating a season-ending procedure, but the Pistons only stated that Griffin would "undergo an extended rehabilitation period."

Disabled player exceptions are awarded to teams that are expected to be without a player for the remainder of that season.

Griffin is earning $34.2 million in 2019-20, the third season of a five-year, $173-million contract he originally signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. He's appeared in just 18 of the Pistons' 44 contests this season.
