Love, Cavs to financially support arena staff during NBA's suspension
Kevin Love will donate $100,000 through his foundation to support Cleveland Cavaliers staff affected by the NBA's ongoing suspension, the five-time All-Star announced Thursday.
"Through the game of basketball, we've been able to address major issues and stand together as a progressive league that cares about the players, the fans, and the communities where we work," Love wrote on Instagram.
"I'm concerned about the level of anxiety that everyone is feeling and that is why I'm committing $100,000 through the (Kevin Love Fund) in support of the (Cavaliers') arena and support staff that had a sudden life shift due to the cancellation of the NBA season. I hope that during this time of crisis, others will join me in supporting our communities."
The Cavaliers later confirmed they will be "compensating all (arena) hourly and event staff team members as if every game and every event is still taking place."
Figures from other organizations have given consideration to supporting their game-day staff. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said the team would "put together a program for them." Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Toronto Raptors, the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, and MLS' Toronto FC, announced via press release that it is "currently finalizing programs to assist our part-time and event staff," which number close to 4,000.
Love has been one of the biggest proponents of mental health initiatives among current players. Notably, he penned an essay for The Players' Tribune in March 2018 detailing his struggles with panic attacks. The 31-year-old has remained outspoken about the cause.
"It's important to know that those with a mental illness may be vulnerable to the effects of widespread panic and threat," Love added. "Be kind to one another. Be understanding of their fears, regardless if you don't feel the same. Be safe and make informed decisions during this time.
"And I encourage everyone to take care of themselves and to reach out to others in need - whether that means supporting your local charities that are canceling events, or checking in on your colleagues and family."
