Some NBA teams opening practice facilities will be permitted to administer coronavirus testing to asymptomatic players and staff, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The allowance hinges on whether there is enough testing available for health-care workers in a team's municipality. Written authorization from a local health authority confirming a "robust testing program in place for at-risk health-care workers" in a team's community will receive league approval.
Organizations including the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers are expected to qualify for the exception, according to Wojnarowski.
The Orlando Magic confirmed Friday that they qualified for the allowance.
"We have been assured we are not taking any tests from health-care workers, first responders, or anyone, whether they are experiencing symptoms or (are) asymptomatic," a team spokesperson said, according to Wojnarowski. "As we've been told, the general public in our community can go to numerous locations to receive a coronavirus test."
A report Wednesday stated the league had instructed teams not to test asymptomatic personnel due to a perceived shortage of testing nationally. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban added that he wouldn't open his team's facility if testing wasn't available for players.
