Lakers' Bradley opts out of NBA restart, JR Smith could join L.A.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Avery Bradley won't be participating in the NBA's restart in Orlando, he told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday.
Bradley's decision is largely based on his family's safety. His six-year-old son has a history of struggling to recover from respiratory illnesses, and he likely wouldn't have been permitted inside the league's bubble, Wojnarowski adds.
"As committed to my Lakers teammates and the organization as I am, I ultimately play basketball for my family," Bradley said. "And so, at a time like this, I can't imagine making any decision that might put my family's health and well-being at even the slightest risk."
The 29-year-old - who, along with Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving, is a co-leader of a players' coalition focused on tackling issues connected to social justice and racial equality - also vowed to continue devoting time toward "the formation of projects to help strengthen my communities" while sitting out.
Bradley was in the midst of a productive season for the championship-contending Lakers, averaging 8.6 points on 36.4% shooting from long range. He made 44 starts as a key complimentary 3-and-D player alongside the Los Angeles' star duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The defensive specialist is leaving an estimated $650,000 in salary on the table by sitting out, Wojnarowski notes. Bradley becomes the third known player to opt out of the league's restart so far. Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans and Portland Trail Blazers forward Trevor Ariza are both reportedly done for the remainder of the campaign too.
Free-agent guard JR Smith is a leading candidate to take Bradley's place on the Lakers' roster, Wojnarowski reports. Smith last appeared in an NBA game in November 2018, and he was linked to the Lakers earlier this season.
