Morant apologizes for posting anti-police slogan on social media

Ja Morant has issued an apology for sharing an anti-police slogan on his social media on Sunday.

"I want to first apologize for reposting something that didn't clearly and accurately convey what I wanted to share," Morant wrote. "My post was intended to focus on the bad cops who get away with the murder of unarmed Black men and women, and those who continue to harass peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors."

The Grizzlies rookie posted a photoshopped image of his jersey, with the word "F---" replacing his last name above his No. 12. The No. 12 is used by some to represent "police," and the "F--- 12" slogan has been used by protestors and on social media in the wake of George Floyd's death.

"I know there are good cops '12' out there. I know some, and a few are family," Morant added. "I am thankful to the cops at Murray State who took care of me and the cops who continue to watch over me with the Grizzlies. We need good cops to step up and make sure other cops are not abusing their power."

Morant concluded his post by demanding justice for Breonna Taylor, an unarmed Black woman who was fatally shot by Louisville police while in her home in March.

The NBA is working on a plan that will allow players to replace their last names on their jerseys with social justice statements.

Morant has publicly advocated in recent weeks for social justice and racial equality. Earlier this month, the star point guard requested the removal of a Confederate statue near his alma mater of Murray State.
