Timberwolves' Beasley charged with threats of violence, drug possession

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Malik Beasley has been charged with two felony counts - threats of violence and fifth-degree drug possession - stemming from his arrest at his residence in Plymouth, Minnesota on Sept. 26, according to a release from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office obtained by KSTP's Darren Wolfson.

According to the criminal complaints from the incident, a family touring the neighborhood called 911 after the 23-year-old Beasley allegedly pointed an assault rifle at them after they stopped outside his home. A separate individual who was driving by at the time of the incident also claimed to have witnessed Beasley point the weapon at the vehicle.

Security footage obtained via warrant showed Beasley obtaining a firearm from a closet, walking out of his garage, and then returning the firearm to its place eight minutes later.

While searching for the rifle at Beasley's residence, officers also located 835 grams of marijuana on the premises. Beasley's wife, Montana Yao, claimed the drugs were hers, though she failed to produce documentation to back up her claim that the marijuana was for medical purposes.

Yao also faces a felony charge of fifth-degree drug possession. In Minnesota, possession of more than 42.5 grams of marijuana results in the fifth-degree distinction.

Beasley is slated to make his first court appearance on Nov. 19.

"We are cooperating with the law enforcement investigation and will carefully review the discovery and charges in the coming days," reads a joint statement from Beasley's attorneys given to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Beasley, who was traded to the Timberwolves from the Denver Nuggets prior to the 2020 trade deadline, is set to reach restricted free agency when the upcoming offseason begins.
