Report: NBA sets out COVID-19 protocols for fans
The NBA sent a memo to all 30 teams featuring COVID-19 protocols for eligible markets to host fans at games this season, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Fans seated within 30 feet of the court will need to either register a negative coronavirus test two days before the game or get a negative result from a rapid test the day of the game. All fans above the age of 2 would be required to wear masks, practice physical distancing, and complete symptom surveys.
Food and beverage consumption won't be allowed for spectators within 30 feet of the court, and teams have the option to install a plexiglass shield behind the benches.
Fans seated in arena luxury suites at 25% capacity or less would not require testing. A 50% capacity for suites would be allowed if all occupants were tested, or if the county's COVID-19 positivity rate is 3% or below and its seven-day average of new cases per 100,000 residents is 10 or fewer, according to Charania.
Whether fans are allowed in NBA arenas will still depend on local public health regulations. Some NFL cities have permitted limited spectators at games this season, while others have not.
It was reported last week that the NBA was considering opening luxury suites and premium seating to a limited number of fans this season. The 2020-21 campaign tips off Dec. 22.
