Tim Duncan is leaving his full-time coaching job with the San Antonio Spurs after one season, The New York Times' Marc Stein reports.
The Spurs internally felt Duncan would only serve as an assistant coach for one campaign, Stein adds. He's expected to resume his previous player development role with the team.
Duncan stepped in as the Spurs' active head coach on one occasion, leading the team to victory over the Charlotte Hornets on March 3. He began his role as an assistant in July 2019.
The legendary power forward won five championships with San Antonio over a 19-year career. He owns the franchise mark for career points (26,496) and the NBA record for most wins by a player with one team (1,001).
