The Miami Heat are hiring former NBA veteran Caron Butler as an assistant coach on Erik Spoelstra's staff, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel's Ira Winderman.

Butler broke into the league with Miami after being drafted 10th overall by the organization in 2002. He went on to play for eight other teams across 14 seasons before announcing his retirement in 2018.

"This is something I've always wanted to do. I just felt like this was my calling," Butler said of joining Spoelstra's staff, per Winderman.

Butler qualified for two All-Star Games in 2007 and 2008 while he was a member of the Washington Wizards and won an NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

The 40-year-old last played with the Sacramento Kings in the 2015-16 campaign.
