Giannis: 'Right now, I'm not focusing' on supermax deal

Reigning back-to-back NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is doing his best this offseason to not think about his future contract situation.

"Right now, I'm not focusing on that. I know my agent Alex (Saratsis), and Jon Horst, and the (Milwaukee Bucks) ownership are focusing on those discussions. I'm just trying to focus on myself," Antetokounmpo told reporters Wednesday.

Antetokounmpo is eligible to sign a five-year, $223-million supermax extension with the Bucks until Dec. 21.

Though he hasn't yet decided whether he'll remain in Milwaukee long term, Antetokounmpo commended the Bucks' offseason acquisitions, particularly Jrue Holiday.

"Having Holiday on the team is big time," he said. "He's a great leader, a great human being. He can defend, he can score the ball. He's going to bring that edge on this team that we need."

Milwaukee faces added pressure after failing to reach the NBA Finals in consecutive years despite dominant regular-season records, but Antetokounmpo said he doesn't believe this season is a "championship-or-bust situation."

The 26-year-old dominated throughout the 2019-20 campaign, averaging 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in only 30.4 minutes per contest. Antetokounmpo's contributions played a key role in the Bucks finishing with a league-best 56-17 record.
