NBA fines Nets, Irving $25K each for star guard's refusal to speak to media
The NBA has fined the Brooklyn Nets and star guard Kyrie Irving $25,000 each for violating the league's media access rules.
"The fines result from Irving's refusal on several occasions this week to participate in team media availability," the NBA noted in its Thursday announcement.
Irving, 28, released a written statement through one of his own representatives in lieu of speaking to reporters last Friday.
While the six-time All-Star expressed his excitement for the upcoming 2020-21 season, he added he would not speak to the media directly "to ensure that (his) message is conveyed properly."
The current collective bargaining agreement between the league and the National Basketball Players Association has rules requiring players to speak with reporters.
"Upon request, the player shall consent to and make himself available for interviews by representatives of the media conducted at reasonable times," reads one section of the CBA.
