Cavaliers' Porter has firearms, marijuana charges dropped

Firearms and marijuana charges against Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kevin Porter Jr. following his arrest in November have been dropped, his lawyer Alex Spiro told ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Porter was arrested early in the morning of Nov. 15 after flipping his vehicle on an interstate highway near Cleveland. When police responded, they found a loaded handgun and a small amount of marijuana in the car.

The second-year shooting guard was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a vehicle as well as misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and driving without a license. Porter admitted he failed to control his vehicle. A grand jury declined to indict him on the gun charge, and the other two charges were dismissed.

The 20-year-old could still face discipline from the NBA, including a potential suspension or fine, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff suggested Wednesday that Porter will not participate in their remaining preseason games as part of a "plan in place" for the player, according to Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor. He did not specify whether Porter would return for Cleveland's first game of the season against the Charlotte Hornets on Dec. 23.
