Cuban won't fire Carlisle after Mavs' postseason elimination
Mark Cuban is sticking with Rick Carlisle.
The Dallas Mavericks owner ruled out removing the team's longtime head coach from his post after the Los Angeles Clippers eliminated his team from the playoffs following a Game 7 loss Sunday.
"Let me tell you how I look at coaching. You don't make a change to make a change," Cuban told ESPN's Tim MacMahon. "Unless you have someone that you know is much, much, much better, the grass is rarely greener on the other side."
Cuban's response came after Carlisle said he'd like to remain Dallas' head coach despite back-to-back first-round exits against the Clippers but conceded the decision is ultimately Cuban's to make.
"That's a question you'll have to ask Mark," Carlisle said postgame when asked if he's still the right coach for the Mavericks, courtesy of The New York Times' Marc Stein. "I obviously do, but I'd text him and see what he has to say about it."
Carlisle has managed the Mavericks since May 2008. He's the third-longest tenured NBA head coach behind the Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra and Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs.
In 13 seasons in Dallas, Carlisle, who owns the franchise record for wins, has led the team to a 555-478 regular-season record and nine playoff appearances. He helped the Mavericks win their only championship in 2011.
