Orlando Magic | Over | 21.5 | 21-51 |
Atlanta Hawks over 47
The Hawks went 27-11 (.711) under head coach Nate McMillan last year, but they're expected to win just 57% of their games this season. I'm not buying such steep regression in Year 2.
Boston Celtics under 45.5
This Celtics roster is worse than the one that finished .500 a year ago, and the team replaced longtime head coach Brad Stevens with first-time head coach Ime Udoka. Regression looms.
Brooklyn Nets under 56.5
The Nets were already a regular-season fade because of their injury history and shaky depth. If Kyrie Irving misses more than half of Brooklyn's games, this will be a tough sell.
Charlotte Hornets over 37.5
Oddsmakers expect a near-identical season from the Hornets in LaMelo Ball's second pro campaign. The safer bet is modest improvement from one of the NBA's youngest teams.
Chicago Bulls under 42.5
The Bulls clearly improved on paper, but where will the shooting come from? This feels like too much to ask of a team that went 31-41 last season.
Cleveland Cavaliers under 27.5
Until the Cavaliers become a cohesive unit instead of a collection of talented but redundant assets, I'm fading their actual gains on the court.
Dallas Mavericks over 48.5
The Jason Kidd hiring was misguided, but I'm optimistic about the Mavericks' new head coach utilizing Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis in ways Rick Carlisle never did.
Denver Nuggets over 47.5
Remember when the Nuggets looked like potential title contenders after acquiring Aaron Gordon? Jamal Murray's absence undoubtedly hurts, but Monte Morris is among the NBA's best backup point guards and can steady this unit early in the year.
Detroit Pistons under 25.5
The pieces in Detroit will come together eventually, but it'll take time for Cade Cunningham and Co. to mesh for a Pistons team coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Golden State Warriors under 47.5
I'm deeply skeptical of this Warriors roster beyond Stephen Curry as Klay Thompson returns from two years of rehab and Draymond Green's skill set deteriorates. This might be the most inflated total on the board.
Houston Rockets under 26.5
This Rockets team can score, but can it do much else? Houston's rotation doesn't have much in the way of defensive stalwarts or even "winning players," which likely means another high lottery pick.
Indiana Pacers under 42.5
There are pieces for Carlisle to work with in his first year with the Pacers, but this backcourt is injury-prone and lacks the star power to carry it above .500 if anything goes wrong.
Los Angeles Clippers over 45.5
The safer bet is the under, with Kawhi Leonard expected to miss most - if not all - of the regular season. Yet I'm bullish on Paul George's upside as the top dog for the Clippers.
Los Angeles Lakers under 53.5
I'm skeptical about the Lakers' postseason hopes after the team added Russell Westbrook this summer, but I'm torn on their regular-season outlook. Questions about this team's health and second unit have me narrowly leaning under.
Memphis Grizzlies over 40.5
The Grizzlies sent two starters packing this offseason, but their nucleus of young, improving talent should build on last year's 38-34 campaign.
Miami Heat over 48.5
The Heat's 2020-21 season was a disaster from the get-go, but I expect a return to dominant defensive form with Kyle Lowry in the mix. His playmaking should unlock Miami's bevy of shooters, too.
Milwaukee Bucks over 55.5
The Bucks maintained a 60-win pace in two straight seasons before taking a step back last year - then built a juggernaut on the fly in the postseason. Fear the deer in 2021-22.
Minnesota Timberwolves under 35.5
The Timberwolves did nothing this offseason to improve one of the league's worst rosters. Why are oddsmakers expecting such a sizable bump from last year's 23-49 squad?
New Orleans Pelicans under 38.5
Are we sure the Pelicans are better than last year? Even a sneaky top-10 season from Zion Williamson wasn't enough to carry a superior roster to a .500 record.
New York Knicks under 41.5
Hustle can only get you so far. Even if the Knicks appear better on paper, they'll struggle to match last year's 41-win effort in an improved Eastern Conference.
Oklahoma City Thunder under 22.5
There's plenty of talent on the NBA's youngest roster, but it doesn't mesh particularly well. That isn't the plan, anyway, for GM Sam Presti and the ever-tanking Thunder.
Orlando Magic over 21.5
Can Jalen Suggs, Markelle Fultz, or Cole Anthony be the answer for this backcourt? The Magic won't be good, but there's enough talent to bet over on the league's lowest win total.
Philadelphia 76ers under 51.5
As much as I like Philadelphia's remaining pieces, this price discounts Ben Simmons' on-court impact for the 76ers - and the off-court toll of his trade demand and ensuing drama. Barring a superstar deal, this is a clear fade.
Phoenix Suns under 50.5
Everything went right last year for the Suns, who were among the healthiest teams in 2020-21 and had the most-played starting lineup in the NBA. Teams rarely get so lucky twice.
Portland Trail Blazers over 44.5
This defense should improve under head coach Chauncey Billups, who has the tools to justify a more aggressive approach. If the Trail Blazers' offense can sustain its elite form, Portland is a sneaky title contender.
Sacramento Kings over 35.5
The three-headed backcourt of De'Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, and Davion Mitchell is both crowded and terrifying for opposing ball-handlers. This is the year the Kings develop an identity behind their high-motor guards.
San Antonio Spurs over 29.5
The Spurs haven't won fewer than 30 games since before Gregg Popovich took over in 1997-98. Even without DeMar DeRozan, this team can surprise with increased roles for Most Improved Player candidates Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson.
Toronto Raptors over 36.5
Losing Lowry is not insignificant, but this young Raptors roster has too much talent not to improve on last year's 27-45 debacle.
Utah Jazz over 53.5
The Jazz rode depth and elite shooting to a 59-win pace a year ago and improved around the edges this summer. They can easily make a similar run this season.
Washington Wizards over 34.5
This Wizards team is essentially the same as last year's roster sans Westbrook, who posted his worst season since 2008-09. I expect Bradley Beal to flourish as the clear No. 1 option every night.
