Cavaliers promote Mike Gansey to GM
The Cleveland Cavaliers promoted assistant general manager Mike Gansey to general manager, the team announced Wednesday.
Gansey replaces former GM Koby Altman, who was promoted to president of basketball operations in January. Gansey began his career with the Cavaliers as a basketball operations intern in 2011.
"Mike has been an incredible resource to me and this organization and his work behind the scenes gives me great confidence that he is ready to take on more of a leadership role," Altman said in a statement. "His community roots provide a unique perspective when evaluating players and the type of commitment needed to make a positive impact in Cleveland. I could not think of a better person to work alongside as we continue building this team toward sustainable success."
In addition to earning G League Executive of the Year honors in 2018 for his work with the Cleveland Charge, Gansey worked with Altman to revitalize the Cavs in recent years. He helped draft young stars Darius Garland and Evan Mobley and also played a part in acquiring Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert through trades.
The Cavs also promoted Brandon Weems to assistant general manager, Jason Hillman to vice president of basketball operations, and Jon Nichols to vice president of basketball strategy and personnel.
Cleveland sits fourth in the East with a 35-23 record as play is set to resume after the All-Star break.
