Report: Kenny Atkinson front-runner for Hornets' head coaching job
Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson has emerged as the front-runner for the Charlotte Hornets' vacant head coaching position, sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick and Shams Charania.
Atkinson is slated for his third interview with the Hornets, which will involve owner Michael Jordan and team management, according to Amick and Charania. Charlotte reportedly first began interviewing candidates on May 3.
The 55-year-old previously coached the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-20. In addition to his stint with Golden State, Atkinson has served as an assistant with the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Clippers. He is currently coaching in the NBA Finals with the Warriors.
Veteran coaches Mike D'Antoni and Terry Stotts both remain in the running for the coaching gig, though neither has reportedly advanced as far into the interview process. Charlotte is seeking out a replacement for James Borrego, who was dismissed in April after four seasons.
The Hornets finished 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-39 record during the 2021-22 campaign, which qualified them for the play-in tournament.
