The New York Knicks waived center Taj Gibson, the team announced Friday.
Gibson was set to enter the second season of a two-year, $10.1-million contract with the Knicks. By cutting Gibson, New York instead saves $5.1 million against the salary cap since the remainder of the veteran's deal was non-guaranteed.
Several teams had expressed interest in acquiring Gibson since the start of free agency, SNY's Ian Begley reports. The 37-year-old is planning to sign with the Washington Wizards once he clears waivers, sources tell The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Gibson averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game across three seasons with the Knicks. He originally signed with the team as a free agent in July 2019.
