Report: Nets sign GM Marks to extension amid volatile offseason

Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks signed an extension with the club in early July, sources told Kristian Winfield of the Daily News.

The duration of Marks' new deal isn't clear, though it comes as the franchise navigates one of its most turbulent offseasons in recent memory headlined by Kevin Durant's reported desire to leave after just three seasons.

Marks' extension was reportedly agreed upon after Durant requested a trade. Durant's business manager Rich Kleiman confirmed on June 30 that the 34-year-old wanted to leave the Nets.

Marks, 46, joined the front office in February 2016, initially signing a four-year deal. In his first full season in charge in 2016-17, the Nets finished last in the East at 20-62 but won 28 and 42 games, respectively, in the following two seasons, snapping a three-year postseason drought in 2019.

The New Zealand-born executive rebuilt the Nets during his tenure, beginning with his hiring of Kenny Atkinson as head coach in 2016. That same year, he acquired the draft rights to Caris LeVert and signed both Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie as free agents, with all three, among others, playing significant roles in the team's rebuild. His most significant additions came in the summer of 2019, during which he landed both Durant and Kyrie Irving as free agents.
