Report: Knicks offered Jazz package including Barrett, Robinson for Mitchell
The New York Knicks offered the Utah Jazz a package that featured RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, Obi Toppin, and three unprotected first-round picks for Donovan Mitchell ahead of the star's eventual trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
New York's proposal was reportedly rejected in July and soon became an impossible framework once Robinson signed a four-year, $60-million contract. He would have needed to be moved to Utah in a sign-and-trade prior to the deal.
Barrett signed a four-year, $120-million extension with New York on Monday, making it difficult for him to be included in packages as well. The 22-year-old's salary would have been split down the middle between his old contract and his new one in trade talks due to the poison pill provision, so matching money would have proved complicated.
The Knicks could have potentially included more first-round picks than the Cavaliers ultimately did Thursday but had few proven, young players to offer Utah. Cleveland, meanwhile, was able to provide Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton.
While New York failed to bring Mitchell into the fold, Barrett and Robinson both factor in as capable starters alongside All-Star Julius Randle and prized free-agent acquisition Jalen Brunson.
