Warriors ink Wiggins to 4-year, $109M extension
The Golden State Warriors have signed forward Andrew Wiggins to a four-year, $109-million contract extension, his agents told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Kendra Andrews.
Wiggins averaged 17.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season, leading to his first All-Star appearance.
The 27-year-old played a key part in Golden State's championship run, averaging 18.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest in the NBA Finals as the Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics in six games. He racked up a career-high 16 rebounds in Golden State's pivotal Game 4 victory.
The Warriors also tasked Wiggins with guarding superstar Luka Doncic in the Western Conference finals and Jayson Tatum in the Finals, which he did with great success. Tatum shot just 36.7% from the field and averaged 3.8 turnovers per game in the Finals, struggling against Wiggins' length and defensive proficiency.
Between Wiggins' new deal and Jordan Poole's $140-million rookie extension, which the team also agreed to Saturday, the Warriors are paying a huge price to bring back their championship core. The team's payroll and luxury tax spending for the 2023-24 season is currently estimated to reach an unprecedented $483 million.
Golden State acquired Wiggins along with two draft picks in February 2020 in exchange for D'Angelo Russell.
