Report: Blazers' Payton fails physical, puts 4-team trade in doubt
A four-team trade involving the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons could fall through due to a failed physical from Gary Payton II, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater.
The Warriors have until 9:30 p.m. ET on Sunday to determine whether to go through with the trade or rescind the entire deal based on Payton's physical, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Golden State believes Portland withheld critical information about Payton's abdominal injury prior to the trade and expects the 30-year-old to miss a significant part of the rest of the regular season, added Wojnarowski.
The guard reportedly played through pain in Portland and was given Toradol shots and told by the organization to fight through the injury. Golden State was unaware of the situation, add Charania and Slater.
The rest of the trade has Warriors big man James Wiseman heading to Detroit, Pistons wing Saddiq Bey landing in Atlanta, and Hawks forward Kevin Knox and five second-round picks going to Portland.
Payton played for the Warriors from 2020-22, winning a championship with the club last campaign. He signed with Portland in the offseason, but an injury limited him to 15 games.
